Bad weather led to an injury-free Easter for the Red Cross – NRK Vestfold and Telemark – Local news, TV and radio

--

This year’s Easter did not turn out to be from its best side. At least not weather-wise.

In large parts of Austlandet, it has been raining and cloudy, and the sun has hardly been seen.

For the Red Cross, these holiday days have been calmer than in a long time.

– We have had some injuries, and that is every Easter. But none of the big events, says Stian Michelsen, who is operational manager of the Telemark Red Cross.

Although many people have been out, they probably haven’t set out on the longest trips, he thinks.

– Go out and get some fresh air, and then relax a bit again.

The “normal Easter”

A more relaxed Easter is the new normal, believes Michelsen. Before the pandemic, the holiday season was busy.

– It seems that people overestimated their abilities and took significantly greater chances than they do now.

Even though you couldn’t be out in the ski resort, people were still out in the terrain and skiing during the corona era.

For Michelsen, it seems that we now make better choices and plan our trips better.

Despite a quiet week for the auxiliary staff, they are not on the lazy side, assures Michelsen.

– It is fresh produce, in the same way as much else. A lot goes into training and maintenance of equipment.

Telemark still tops the injury statistics, but the Red Cross writes on their website that they praise the tourists for good mountain white through Easter this year.

197 assignments

In short, Easter for the Red Cross consisted of 197 missions and 273 injuries.

Among these are 160 retrieval missions, 21 search missions, 3 landslides and 13 other missions.

There are fewer injuries than normal, according to the Red Cross.

On average, there tend to be more than twice as many injuries at Easter than what has been registered this year.

Until Good Friday, the volunteers had been out on 140 missions.

Telemark has the highest number of injuries in the country and in Drangedal they had a particularly busy day on Maundy Thursday, with as many as 12 injuries.

The injuries came after an annual après ski at Gautefall ski center.

– It was full and partying, mostly, said communications consultant Kjersti Veel Krauss to NRK last week.
