The concern about the hard pressure on the internship students is shared by the trade unions of the journalist and nursing students at NRK.

– We hear stories about internships that come up with statements that they do not need to hire replacements in the event of illness because the department has student nurses. It is unsustainable, says the student leader of the Norwegian Nurses Association, Daniel Tørresvoll Stabu, to the channel.

Large parts of the nursing studies are practice-oriented at various institutions and departments.

– Especially during the first internship period, we get more feedback about internship shock. That you have an idea of what the healthcare system is like, which is not entirely in accordance with reality, Tørresvoll tells Stabu.

On the journalism course, there are several trainees who feel that they are getting in the way of other employees.

– Journalism students often do not have the same capacity as journalists who have been in the profession for several decades. I think you can therefore feel a bit like a burden, as you don’t deliver to the same extent as “everyone else”, says Regine Lund Kristensen to NRK. She is a leader in NJ Student, the student organization of the Norwegian Journalist Association.

Kristensen also believes that more internship students are reluctant to register overtime hours. The journalism course is one of the few where students are paid for their work.

– As an intern, there are probably a number of people who might not want to stand out in the crowd, and maybe therefore they are reluctant to ask for the extra money on their salary, she says.
