Despite gray weather and gloomy weather forecasts, the tourist hosts in the mountains can report that the start of Easter has been better than expected.
So far this Easter, several thousand Easter tourists have visited a serviced DNT cabin.
Compared to last year, there is talk of a slight increase, reports the tourist association.
Siri Storstein Hytten, communications manager at DNT, reports on Maundy Thursday about a brilliant start to Easter.
– So far it looks good. Many people and many places have better weather than the report would suggest, she says.
A little further down in the article, you will find an overview of the most popular cabins in Easter.
A new and popular cabin
The small increase is mainly due to a new and popular cabin.
– We’ve had an increase in some mountain areas compared to last year, but last year we didn’t have Leirvassbu, says the communication manager at DNT, Andreas Blaauw-Hval.
Last year DNT bought the popular tourist cabin Leirvassbu in Jotunheimen.
With around 60 available 2000 meter peaks, the cabin is very popular for those who want to pick high peaks in Jotunheimen.
This is the most important reason why DNT reports increased Easter traffic in Jotunheimen.
– It has been fully booked every day, but there are also some cancellations, so we have some spare capacity on some days, say the directors of Leirvassbu, Terje and Gitte Sølna.
The ten most popular
So far, Leirvassbu has had over 800 Easter guests, which makes it the second most popular cabin in the DNT system. Just beaten by Finsehytta with its over 900 guests.
– We have 170-180 people here every day, and there are only wide Easter smiles to be seen when they come in again in the evenings, says Terje Sølna at Leirvassbu.
– It has been fully booked every day, but there are also some cancellations, so we have some spare capacity on some days, say the directors of Leirvassbu, Terje and Gitte Sølna.
According to DNT, these are the ten most popular cabins so far this Easter:
- 1. Finsehytta
- 2. Leirvassbu
- 3. Hawk eaters
- 4. Fondsbu
- 5. The stool
- 6. Gjendesheim
- 7. Glitter home
- 8. Rondvassbu
- 9. Sand pile
- 10. Geiterygghytta
This cabin has the largest increase
Øystein Garden has its first Easter ruling at Gjendebu in Jotunheimen, and has almost doubled the number of guest nights compared to last year.
– Here in Gjendebu it has been very well visited compared to previous years, but it is mostly young adults and couples, says the tourist host at the Øystein Garden cabin.
Gjendebu lies at the heart of the mountain lake Gjende, and is the oldest cabin in the DNT system.
He has registered 158 guests for the Palm weekend. That’s 80 more than last year, making Gjendebu the cabin that increased the most this Easter.
– I think that many of our previous guests at Rondvassbu have followed us here to Jotunheimen, and so we have renovated a lot here this winter, says Garden, who previously operated Rondvassbu in Rondane.
Øystein Garden hopes that more people will discover the charm of going from hut to hut on mountain skis.
– Cabin tourism is not dead. We will be investing more in it in the future, and it seems that people have rediscovered the charm of cross-country skiing and mountain skiing, says the Gjendebu manager.
Meiner Easter habits have changed
But despite the increase, someone notices that people’s Easter habits have changed.
– Many of our guests have private cabins that they also wish to use during Easter, says tourist host Øystein Garden.
Many of the mountain-loving tourists have now acquired their own mountain huts which they wish to use at Easter.
Garden believes that the huge increase in the private cabin market has led to people changing their Easter habits, and now have shorter stays in the tourist cabins.
– We had quite a few guests here before Easter who said they wanted to take with them the charm of going from cabin to cabin, but that they wanted to stay at the family cabin during Easter, he says.
