Almost 900 turned up at the premises at Grønland in Oslo on Wednesday morning, but only 200 got food, according to NRK.

Chairman Arya Kalhor of Fattighuset says it has been difficult to get enough food in for the past six weeks. He wants to stay open, but says there is no food in stock or in the freezer, and very little refrigerated goods.

– Date goods are bought up by people who need food for their families, and then both we and the Food Center get less, says Kalhor.

The Salvation Army also receives less surplus food across the country, but does not send anyone home empty-handed. They use their own collected funds to buy food.

Coordinator for the Salvation Army’s social work, Irene Mathisen, believes there is dignity in buying one’s own food.

– So we want to applaud good solutions such as Too Good To Go, but we want the big producers to help give to the food centres, she says.

The food centers around the country ensure that the industry can easily give up surplus food and redistributes the food to the aid organisations.

But the solution is not just more free food, but to find out why people stand in the food queue, emphasizes Mathisen.

– The politicians must look at benefits and reduce VAT where they can, she says to NRK.
