News, Bergen | The meteorologist: Good chances of seeing the northern lights in Bergen tonight

A strong outbreak of aurora borealis is expected over Sunday, and Bergen and the surrounding area are no exception.

The fact that it has been such a clear and cloudless day in the first place makes the situation even better, according to meteorologist Eldbjørg Moxnes.

– There are certainly opportunities to see the northern lights in Bergen this evening. You have to have few clouds, and you don’t have that, so it bodes well.

Up high and away from the light

Moxnes assumes that it can be visible as early as around 2030, but according to the plan it will only increase more the later it gets.

After midnight and during the night to Monday, the peak is expected.

So for those who are extra enthusiastic about the northern lights, it is important to stay awake as long as possible.

The meteorologist does not rule out that it may be possible to see the northern lights from the center of Bergen, but emphasizes that it is better the further away from the light pollution you are.

– It is difficult to see when there is a lot of light around you. Exactly where the best view will be is difficult to know, but a high place with a good view can be good.

One more fine weather day

We have put behind us a rare fine Sunday in Bergen, with brilliant sun, blue skies and a good temperature in the solar wall.

When BA spoke to the meteorologist on Saturday, it seemed that both Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday would offer similar fine weather.

Since then, however, a low pressure has managed to sneak in, and now only Monday looks really good in the Easter week ahead.

– Beyond Tuesday, it will probably rain. Things are changing here, and it looks like some of the good weather days have been swallowed up by low pressure activity, says Moxnes.

It should get a little cooler before it gets milder again from Wednesday. And in a week’s time, on the first day of Easter, it is currently reported to be 14 degrees Celsius in Bergen.
