It was Kristina Aasland who died after the drowning accident in Sarpsborg on Maundy Thursday. The name is released in consultation with the next of kin.

The 37-year-old was reported missing when she did not return from a walk with her dog. She had an appointment with the family the same day.

The police’s main hypothesis is that Aasland went out on frozen water in an attempt to save his dog. There were no witnesses to the incident.

– This appears to be a tragic accident, says crime boss Daniel Holm of the Sarpsborg police.

Large search operation

A large search operation was launched with assistance from the rescue helicopter, dog patrol and volunteer search teams on Thursday afternoon.

Aasland was located with the help of a helicopter. She was taken to hospital, but her life could not be saved.

The 37-year-old has been sent for an autopsy and the police are now waiting for the results.

– We will wait for the results of the autopsy report before we consider whether we should do any further investigation, says Holm.

– Deeply tragic

Aasland and the dog were found in a body of water by a gravel roof near the popular hiking area Kalnesskogen on Grålum.

Sarpsborg municipality has had a crisis team available for the woman’s next of kin.

– It is a deeply tragic incident, and my thoughts go out to the deceased and his next of kin, said the mayor of Sarpsborg Sindre Martinsen-Evje to NRK the day after the accident.
