Don the first Monday in May, according to tradition, the stage is set for the Met Gala.
The year’s biggest fashion party, the fashion world’s party night and the fashion industry’s answer to the Oscars.
The Vogue editor (73) shows off her boyfriend for the first time
It was announced earlier this year as “The Garden of Time”. To understand the dress code, we need to take a closer look at the theme of the fashion party which in turn is determined by the theme of the major exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museums of Arts:
“Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”.
So what does that really mean? A press release from the museum states the following:
Met Gala 2023: – Can someone please tell her it’s not about her?
“Using the natural world as a unifying visual metaphor for fashion’s impermanence, the exhibition will explore cyclical themes of rebirth and renewal, breathing new life into these historic objects through creative and immersive activations designed to convey both smells, sounds, textures and movements of garments that can no longer interact directly with the body.”
It has nothing to do with either the Grimm brothers or Disney, emphasizes Vogue, but is more a celebration of both clothes and fashion so fragile that it can never be worn again, hence sleeping beauties.
And the dress code goes hand in hand with the theme of the exhibition, which is supposedly a direct reference to the British writer JG Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name, which is again a kind of metaphor for human history and the eternal round dance of creation and destruction.
Arrived in a wedding dress
The only question is: Will the guests understand?
Because, after all, it is up to the guests themselves to interpret the dress code, albeit based on the theme, there is room for misunderstandings or at best simplifications, yes – and also understatements.
Kylie Jenner: – That’s why I used the wedding dress
The fashion magazine Dazed are not particularly impressed by this year’s dress code, which they believe is “snoring” – partly precisely because it can be misunderstood or even misinterpreted.
– A clear trend
“Just prepare to see a lot of celebrities in floral patterns,” they write, quoting the feared imaginary fashion editor Miranda Priestly in the cult film The Devil Wears Prada:
“Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking.”
