When you open an egg, the shell must first be broken, after which the yolk and egg white come out. However, when they fall into the bowl or pan, you may also see a small white spot. You can usually see it near the yolk, as it is much darker than the white. But what is it really?

This small white spot near the yolk has puzzled many over the years, but no clear answer has ever been found as to what it is. It has therefore only been guesswork.

For a long time it was thought to be a blood vessel or the umbilical cord from the chicken. However, there is no doubt that these theories are wrong, but what exactly is it? The name of this place found in raw eggs is chalaza.

There are two of them inside the egg. There is one at the top and one at the bottom. They are simply twisted egg whites that look like strings and anchor the yolk to the upper and lower membranes of the shell and prevent the yolk from breaking before the egg opens.

They will be particularly visible in fresh eggs and there is absolutely no reason to remove them.

There is no reason to fear that there is something strange. On the contrary, the calaza will disappear and become an integral part of the egg white when you boil the egg. In addition, its presence is also a sign of freshness, so it is actually only good if it is present.

If you have been worried about eating eggs where this spot is visible, you have no reason to be so in the future. There is absolutely nothing to fear in this regard.
