Tuscany’s regional president Eugenio Giani published on Thursday a https://twitter.com/EugenioGiani/status/1560232491268673537 of a Ferris wheel spinning uncontrollably due to the powerful gusts of wind.

The video was filmed in the town of Piombino, which is located on the west coast of Italy towards the Mediterranean.

He also writes that a yellow warning in the region has been extended until Friday at 8 p.m. In the afternoon on Friday, the storm is expected to increase again with heavy thunderstorms and rain across Tuscany.

The gusts are described as hurricane-like and must have had a strength of up to 224 kilometers per hour, which corresponds to 62 m/s, according to Reuters. On the wind scale, 63 m/s is classified as hurricane force.

A woman and a man lost their lives on Thursday in the coastal town of Carrara in Tuscany, after being hit by trees. This is a town 166 kilometers north of Piombino, where the Ferris wheel ran wild.

A large number of people have been injured in several other places as a result of the storm. According to the Tuscan regional president, Eugenio Giani, there are up to 50 people who have been taken to hospital.

Danger warnings have been issued for the whole of northern Italy and parts of southern Italy as a result of the storm.

Several have lost their lives

The violent and unexpected storm has also given the French Mediterranean island of Corsica a hard time. At least five people have lost their lives, including a 13-year-old girl who was hit by a tree at a campsite.

A 72-year-old woman was killed when her car was hit by a beach hut roof, and a 46-year-old man died when a tree fell on his bungalow.

For several days, it has been torrential rain along large parts of the French south coast, and the storm has also brought with it strong winds, floods and hail.

– We have never seen such a powerful storm like this. You would think it was a tropical storm, says Cedric Boell to Reuters. He runs a restaurant in the north of the island.

The news agency has also spoken to the nature photographer Yolhan Niveau (24), who lives on a campsite in the north-east of Corsica. He says that the storm uprooted trees and damaged caravans.

Five died in Austria

The storm hit several places in France, which has recently been affected by heat waves and drought. And suddenly more precipitation fell in a couple of hours than it has in several months combined.

In Austria, two children have died in a storm in Carinthia, in the south of the country. The children are believed to be between five and eight years old. The two children were by a small lake when the storm hit and uprooted trees. A further three people are said to have died in Austria during the storm and several people have been injured.
