Google lays off Python, Flutter and Dart developers

--

Despite the fact that Google’s parent company was able to report last week that it crushed analysts’ expectations for the fifth year in a row, and increased revenue by more than 15 percent, Google continues to cut costs by downsizing.

Now, according to Infoworld, Google has dismissed its entire Python team. This must have been a relatively small team, but with very experienced Python developers, many of whom are also part of the “Python steering council”.

According to The Register, which refers to messages on social media, the number of positions in the Python team has been reduced in favor of a new team in Munich.

The Register also writes that Google is downsizing the teams working with Flutter and Dart.

– Good people received bad news

Flutter is a cross-platform solution from Google, where Dart is Google’s own programming language that is used to create Flutter apps for both Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and iOS.

Kevin Moore, product manager for Flutter and Dart at Google, writes on Reddit that the layoffs are concerning many team at Google – not just his team.

– Many good people received bad news, and lots of good projects lost people. Flutter and Dart were affected neither more nor less than others. It was a difficult day… difficult weekwrites Moore.

It is unclear how many positions are involved on both the Python, Flutter and Dart teams, and The Register has not received a response to its inquiries to Google about this.

Save Google kills Flutter

Many developers are now afraid that Flutter, like many other Google projects, will end up in the “Killed by Google” graveyard.

Moore writes to Flutter developers on Reddit that he understand that people betting on Flutter and Dart are nervous. But assures them that both he and Google are betting on Flutter and Dart.

Not everyone is reassured:

– We are definitely betting on Flutter… that it will stay “killed” in a few years, writes a developer.

“Simplifies structures”

Google began its downsizing round in January last year when they laid off 12,000 people, or six percent of the entire workforce.

A spokesperson from Google comments to The Register that they have had to make changes in several of the company’s teams to become more efficient and work better, remove unnecessary layers and use resources more correctly.

– Through this, we are simplifying our structures to give employees greater opportunity to work on our most innovative and important advances and what the company prioritizes the most, while at the same time reducing bureaucracy, the statement says.
