The travel website Flysmart24 reports that the local authorities on Mallorca, the southern favourite, are concerned about the tendency towards over-tourism in some places on the island.
Therefore, the authorities must at all times check how many tourists are staying on the popular beaches.
You can forget this
– The concentration of tourists is now recorded using three of the largest mobile operators on the island. They must deliver data to Spain’s central statistical agency, INE, about how many tourists are in the various places, writes the travel website.
Avisa Majorca Daily Bulletin writes that the authorities will find out where it is necessary to limit the number of tourists.
Warns tourists: – Must take the debate
Bjørn Amundsen in Telenor explains to Flysmart24 that this is a common method and that the information obtained cannot be linked to individuals.
– Mobile phones are connected to mobile networks, and mobile operators can track the location of a mobile phone based on the connection data. What is recorded are movements linked to the registration of a mobile phone at mobile stations, so-called base stations. There is nothing that needs to be activated on the mobile phone for the registration to take place, says Amundsen.
