– Given that the Islamic State has taken responsibility for the attack and the threats against our country, we have decided to raise Vigipirate to the highest level, says Prime Minister Gabriel Attal after a meeting with security and defense leaders and President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday.

Vigipirate is France’s national system for terrorist preparedness, which has three levels. It is only three months since the authorities lowered the threat level. The highest level is usually activated in the wake of an attack in France or abroad, or when a threat is considered imminent.

When the threat level is at its highest, it opens the door for extraordinary security measures, including increased patrolling by armed forces in public places such as train stations, airports and houses of worship.
