12 Chinese planes are said to have crossed the so-called median line that runs along the middle of the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense has stated that as of 9:30 a.m. local time on Saturday, it had detected 22 Chinese military aircraft, including Su-30 fighter jets, of which 12 had crossed the median line.

This happens just the day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken ended his visit to China.

On Friday, Blinken met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, AFP reported.

Earlier that day, Blinken met Chinese Foreign Minister Wan Yi. According to American diplomats, the meeting should have been a constructive meeting.

Blinken said, according to the Reuters news agency, that he had stressed the “critical importance” of maintaining peace and stability across the strait while in China.

The United States is Taiwan’s main international supporter and arms supplier.

China considers the island of Taiwan as part of its own territory. Taiwan has its own popularly elected government, but has not formally declared independence from China.

Taiwan is democratically governed, and elections were recently held on the island in January.

In a report from the Norwegian Defense Research Institute (FFI), they warn that a potential war between China and the US over Taiwan could have serious consequences for Norway, as Dagbladet recently mentioned.

When Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in 2022, China responded to the visit by the US top politician by conducting the most extensive military exercises around the island in recent times.
