Earlier this winter, Frida Karlsson became known for her sometimes reckless starts where she ended up with several collapses.

At today’s 20 kilometer chase start, she was not gracious and managed the race perfectly. After a relentless push on the last hill, she was 14 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, Krista Pärmäkoski.

At today’s 20 kilometer chase start, which was the women’s longest distance in the tour ever, there was another edition of Karlsson. She made good tactical decisions along the way when the trio with Krista Pärmäkoski, Anne Kjersti Kalvå and Tiril Udnes Weng took over.

The Swedish favorite entered the field before Pärmäkoski and the Swede drove off both Norwegian women after just over halfway through the race.

– The train has left. Simply. There the trophy was smoking, to put it bluntly, said NRK commentator Torgeir Bjørn when both Weng and Kalvå had to leave.

Norwegian full blast

Together with Pärmäkoski, they maintained a high pace until the infamous Burgstall hill on the last lap. Then she turned up the pace both one and two notches and sailed slowly but surely away from her Finnish rival.

– She has trained on exactly that slope here to be able to turn around. Yesterday she was supposed to cross-country ski. Now she is skating up here. And it answers, says Bjørn.

In the end, she ended up more than 14 seconds ahead of Pärmäkoski, while the Norwegian duo Tiril Udnes Weng and Anne Kjersti Kalvå ended up 1.28 behind and 1.29 behind, respectively.

Has Karlsson decided the Tour de Ski now?

– She may have a bad day, because today me and Tiril had a bad day, but she is a big favorite now, says Kalvå to NRK.

– This was the toughest day of the Tour de Ski so far. It was tough hanging from the first hill. It was heavy, long and terrible, says Weng.

Karlsson now leads by 1.28 to Weng and 1.31 to Kalvå. Pärmäkoski, who had a lead-heavy chase start on stage two, is 1.41 behind in the summary.
