Charging electric cars: – New rule can give you a better price

(Elbil24): The charging network in Norway is constantly improving, but as of today there is actually no overview that gives real-time charging prices.

If you need to charge your electric car, and know that you have, for example, charging stations from Kople, Ionity and Circle K nearby, it is clumsy to find out which one gives you the lowest price on the day in question.

For that reason, the Road Directorate proposes to incorporate an EU regulation into Norwegian regulations, writes Bergens Tidende.

Better price overview

The aim is to make charging prices far more accessible. In addition, it may lead to lower prices, the Competition Authority hopes.

Better overview will result in greater competition, which in turn may force or tempt charging operators to lower prices.

– We want consumers to have better access to information. If they use this information before charging, it can have a positive effect, says senior adviser Stig Torje Bjugn at the Competition Authority.

In collaboration with the battery company StoreDot, Polestar is working to reduce the time it takes to charge.

The Electric Vehicle Association rejoices

The new price overview rule is scheduled to enter into force from 1 January 2025.

The rule is warmly welcomed by the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association.

– We have worked for a long time for this. The system must become simpler and more consumer-friendly, says communications manager Unni Berge at the Electric Vehicle Association.

A survey carried out by the Electric Vehicle Association shows that 74 per cent of respondents struggle to find price information when starting fast charging.

With a new rule in place, the advantage should lie with the electric motorist, who, based on price, can pick and choose between the charging operators.
