Culture and entertainment: It is the friend Jacki Lyden who confirms the death to the newspaper.

Auster died at his home in Brooklyn, New York on Tuesday afternoon of complications from lung cancer, writes the New York Times.

The highly prolific writer was described as a “literary superstar”. He became known in the 1980s with his postmodernist revival of the noir novel.

Auster was probably best known for the “New York trilogy”, three novels published in 1985 and 1986 and later collected into one volume.

He has also published, among others, “Moon Palace” (1989), “Game of Chance” (1990), “The Book of Illusions” (2002), “Brooklynsk dårskap” (2005), “Invisible” (2009), “Sunset Park” ( 2010), and “4 3 2 1” (2017).

Since 1982, Auster has been married to the Norwegian-born writer Siri Hustvedt.
