PETALING JAYA: A fourth person has died following the recent food poisoning outbreak at a popular Malaysian restaurant chain Polam Kopitiam located in Taipei. Taiwan.

The patient had reportedly died due to multiple organ failure.

The latest death chalks up the number of fatalities in the case to four, confirmed Taiwan’s Deputy Health Minister Victor Wang.

According to Focus Taiwan, the fourth victim was the second case in the past three days after another patient also died of multiple organ failure on April 27 (Saturday). Two more people died last month.

The fourth victim was a 40-year-old woman who reportedly ate char kway teow at the restaurant in mid-March.

She then developed symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea after returning home.

35 people had been reported to have fallen ill after eating at the restaurant from March 18 to March 24.

Forensic examinations of the deceased found the presence of Bongkrekic acid, which is a deadly toxin.

Meanwhile, the owner of the Polam Kopitiam restaurant chain has apologized for the recent food poisoning outbreak linked to his business and for heightening public concerns over food safety.

His lawyer said his client has cooperated fully with the investigation into what caused the food poisoning.

The business owner, the manager of the restaurant branch, and a chef have been banned from leaving the country, after they were questioned by the police and the Taipei District Prosecutors Office and provided statements on Wednesday.
