Turn upside down

In addition, more voters than before look back on Trump’s presidency through rose-colored glasses. 55 percent of Americans now characterize Trump’s four years as president as a success, up from 41 percent in January 2021. Among the Republican base, a full 92 percent believe that Trump’s presidency was a success.

In August 2017, when Trump had been president for just under a year, only 24 percent of Americans believed that Trump’s presidency had been a success so far.

Incumbent President Joe Biden is struggling. 61 percent believe his presidency has been a failure, up from 57 percent in January 2022.

The respondents answered in the time period 18 April to 23 April 2024.

Disappointing for Biden in swing states

The experts and commentators point to the economy. Voters associate Trump with the good economy before the pandemic, writes USA expert Henrik Heldahl in a comment.

The economy is also very important to voters in the critical swing states in this year’s election. In a poll from the beginning of April, with over 4,000 respondents, voters in the seven swing states were clear that Trump was best suited to handle the US economy.

Donald Trump Joe Biden
Arizona 56 30
Georgia 56 32
Michigan 49 38
North Carolina 56 33

Nevada

57 33
Pennsylvania 52 35
Wisconsin 52 40

Together, the poll also showed Trump leading by between two and eight percentage points in six of seven swing states. A more recent CBS poll in the swing states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania shows that the presidential candidates are fairly even.
