– Just forget it – Dagsavisen

--

On Wednesday, a months-long tug-of-war over Ukraine aid ended in the US. Democratic President Joe Biden then signed a legislative package worth 61 billion dollars.

The financing of the war in Ukraine has become a hot topic in the domestic election campaign in the United States, and with former President Donald Trump as an unpredictable mentor for many representatives in the Republican Party, the process has been completely deadlocked.

Now the package is in the box, but there should be no more, according to Republican Ohio Senator JD Vance. He was against the comprehensive package.

– If Ukraine thinks they will get 60 billion from Congress one more time? Just forget it. “No chance,” says Vance, according to The Hill.

The presidential election in the United States comes into play

British expert Mark Galeotti believes the senator may get his way.

– Will this be the last Ukraine aid package from the US?

– If Donald Trump wins the presidential election in November, the answer is probably yes, says Mark Galeotti to Dagsavisen.

Galeotti is a historian, researcher and author, and heads the consulting firm Mayak Intelligence. The Briton is considered one of the world’s leading experts on international crime and security policy, with Russia as a special field.

He believes that more other support may come, but that this may be the last big package.

– The support package from the USA is very important. But we should not think that it provides a magical answer of any kind. It is more about the fact that it will make Ukraine stop losing, he has previously stated to Dagsavisen.

Europe and Trump

On his own website Truth Social, former President Donald Trump did not announce support for the aid package as it neared completion, but neither did the opposite. He instead spent most of an article criticizing European countries for not contributing enough to Ukraine, writes NTB.

– Why can’t Europe contribute as much as the USA to provide the help the country so desperately needs? Everyone agrees that Ukrainian strength and survival should be more important to Europe than to us. But it is also important for us, hammered the former president and ended the post with EUROPE, PICK UP THE SPEED!

The EU quickly countered. EU Council President Charles Michel asked Trump to look into the facts and check the numbers, according to NTB.

– Let’s get the numbers on the table. And they show that the EU’s contribution to Ukraine is 143 billion euros, Michel wrote on X.

Facts about the war in Ukraine

  • Russian forces and Russian-backed separatists previously controlled the Crimean peninsula and parts of the Ukrainian counties of Donetsk and Luhansk.
  • Since the invasion, Russian forces have taken control of even more areas in eastern and southern Ukraine. The Russian-occupied areas now make up around 18 percent of the country.
  • The fronts in the war have largely been deadlocked since autumn 2022.
  • Ukraine’s and President Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s stated goal is to recapture all Russian-occupied territories, including the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014.
  • Western countries support Ukraine with large amounts of weapons and military equipment.
  • Neither Ukraine nor Russia state how many soldiers they lose on the battlefield. It is estimated that up to 500,000 soldiers have been killed and wounded in the war, and the majority of these are said to be Russian.
  • The UN has registered over 10,000 civilians killed in Ukraine, but the real number is probably much higher.
  • 6.5 million Ukrainians have fled the country since the invasion, and another 3.7 million are internally displaced.
