The Tesla Model Y is the undisputed sales winner. We have found nine competitors that are cheaper. Some may surprise you.

The Tesla Model Y has everyone’s eyes on it. If there is a price adjustment somewhere in the world, it is guaranteed to be written about in Norway. And if the price goes up or down by a few thousand larks here at home, the media is covered in cases.
This is done at the same time that not a penny is spent on advertising. Tesla has been good, there is no doubt about that.
So far, an incredible 53,908 Model Ys have been registered in Norway since it arrived in August 2021. So far this year, 5,199 have been sold.
Below you can see the top 10 list for new cars so far this year. Four of them are direct competitors to the Model Y. The rest are less expensive and smaller two-wheel drive vehicles.

All must be compared to the Model Y
The Tesla Model Y penetrates almost all segments. It challenges the cheapest cars with its Standard Range with rear-wheel drive, and the very sportiest with Performance. This means that we car testers also almost have to compare everything we drive against the Tesla Model Y.

Best in class – regardless of the cheapest or most expensive
But it is the Long Range AWD that most people buy. As many as 38,601 who have bought Model Y have gone for this one. 11,061 have gone for Performance. 3,212 drives around with rear-wheel drive.
The criteria
2024 has been a poor car sales year in Norway, even for Tesla. But now we also see more clearly than ever that the prices at the other car importers are being adjusted to Tesla.
We have obtained prices for all cars that are natural to compare with the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD.

We have selected all SUVs from 4.5-4.9 metres, with four-wheel drive. We have included information on range (stated in WLTP) and boot size, because these are important criteria for many.
Unfortunately, Tesla measures volume in a slightly different way than everyone else, so it’s the only car that doesn’t have a trunk volume. As a comparison, you can check the video below. There we use our well-known briefcase test.
Not everyone is a competitor
Some are direct competitors, others are typical luxury cars that would rather not be compared to the Model Y.
As many as nine of the 19 SUVs found in the segment we have chosen are actually more affordable. Several of them are well-equipped campaign models.
We have only started from the price lists and price offers on the pages. Few of the cars in the example have a so-called starting price. Most have attractive equipment packages. Some are fully equipped.
So it is good to know that several providers are working hard on leasing with low interest rates, but we have not looked into this and compared it. There are also several car dealers who ask you to get in touch to get a quote, so there can be money to be made from personal attendance.
The exception is again the Tesla Model Y. You can order this online at the current price.
