As a rule, you will also receive both travel costs and travel time at both ends of the flight. In addition, you also get some waiting time at the airport. As a rule, it will then be cheapest by train, while the journey time will be slightly longer.

For example, you can compare the price/journey time of an inland journey between Maxi in Hamar Vest and Skysstasjonen in Osøyro in Bjørnaford municipality.

PS: You can also compare Hamar/Trondheim. Then the train will probably win the race in terms of both time and price.

Shouldn’t it be worth taking the train?

But let’s see traveling from Maxi in Hamar Vest to Osøyro Terminal in Bjørnafjord municipality:

Maxi to Osøyro Terminal by bus/train costs NOK 469 per person

Time taken 10 hours and 49 minutes.

The same journey by bus/train/plane/city rail/bus for one person with the cheapest flight ticket will cost NOK 778

Time spent 4 hours and 1 minute.

Cf. EnTur App and TravelLink.

Travel details:

By bus/train/city rail/bus, you will be able to travel this route in approx. 10 hours and 49 minutes, and pay NOK 469.

By bus/train/plane/city rail/bus as follows:

Travel Maxi/OSL Gardermoen1 hour and 10 min. NOK 251

Waiting time at OSL > 1 hour

Travel OSL/Flesland, flight time approx. 50 min, cheapest ticket NOK 483

Light rail/bus Flesland/Osøyro Terminal, journey time 1 hour and 1 minute, ticket price NOK 44

Total NOK 778

That’s about itt the way it should be. You can save time and pollute more, but then it should also cost more. Or said in another way. It should pay to travel climate-friendly.

In contrast, it is more relevant to debate bus prices vs. train, when both travel time and destination can be roughly the same, because then it suddenly becomes a little more difficult to understand…

A small example that is surprising:

Travel from Maxi in Hamar Vest to the railway station in Moelv.

Travel time by bus + train is stated to be 59 minutes. So approx. 1 hour.

Travel time by bus is for the same time given a travel time of 1 hour and 12 minutes.

Ticket price for bus + train in this case is NOK 134

Ticket price for the same journey by bus is only NOK 55

Ref: EnTur App.

In the last example, it therefore costs the most to travel climate-friendly. Understand it whoever can.

From a climate/environmental perspective, it is really difficult to understand that there should be approx. 60% cheaper to travel by bus vs. train, when the time, travel time and destination are the same.
