NEW YORK (Dagbladet): The famous American author died of complications from lung cancer at his home in Brooklyn on Tuesday evening, the New York Times reports.
Auster is considered one of the leading New York writers.
In the shadow of the man
In many news articles he was described as a “literary superstar”. And The Times Literary Supplement of Britain once referred to him as “one of America’s most spectacularly inventive writers”.
Originally from New Jersey, Auster is particularly associated with the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn where he lived since the 1980s.
His best-known works are the novels in the “New York Trilogy”, but he also wrote film scripts, poetry, essays and song lyrics.

Among other things, he wrote the script for the well-known film “Smoke” from 1995 with Harvey Keitel in the lead role, who owns a tobacco shop in Park Slope.
Auster was married to the Norwegian-born writer Siri Hustvedt. Auster is also survived by his daughter Sophie Auster and sister Janet Auster as well as a grandchild.
