THE MOST POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE to hit Taiwan in 25 years has claimed at least four lives and injured around 50. Schools were evacuated and traffic in large parts of Taiwan came to a standstill when the quake struck in the middle of the morning rush hour this morning. Buildings shook violently – some reportedly collapsed in the city of Hualien, around 11 kilometers from the epicenter – while large landslides affected parts of the island’s interior and a small tsunami spread into the South China Sea, where it washed up on the Okinawa islands, among other things in Japan. A tsunami warning has also been issued for the Philippines. The Taiwanese computer chip manufacturer TSMC – supplier of superconductors to companies such as Apple and Nvidia – reports that its systems are running as normal.
