The rules became stricter for electric scooters in June 2022. But there are still many accidents.

There were 279 serious accidents before the new rules came into force. That was over the course of a year and a half. There have been 223 serious accidents since the new rules came into effect. It is measured over the same length of time. Altogether there are 502 serious accidents.

This is written by Stavanger Aftenblad. Only 56 of the injured were wearing a helmet.

Doctors want even stricter rules. They want everyone to wear a helmet. That’s what doctors at Stavanger University Hospital say. Many suffer injuries to the head and face, say the doctors.

These were the new rules:

  • You must be at least 12 years old to drive an electric scooter.
  • You must wear a helmet if you are under 15 years old.
  • You must stay sober. If you’ve had too much to drink to drive, you shouldn’t drive an electric scooter either. The alcohol limit is 0.2.
  • Electric scooters are considered small electric vehicles.
  • You can lose your driver’s license for driving drunk on an electric scooter.

– Some of the patients also have a fairly high blood alcohol level, says Kjell Tjosevik.

Tjosevik works at Stavanger University Hospital. He believes everyone should wear a helmet.

– It is absurd that the helmet requirement only applies to children under the age of 15.
