The young people get their own attractive hunting grounds and cheap hunting cards from Statskog during the moose hunt to strengthen recruitment.
Statskog is now announcing popular offers for moose hunting at reasonable prices. There is a great deal of competition about hunting opportunities, especially in southern Norway, and a kind of lottery ultimately decides who gets to hunt.
The traditional moose hunt in Norway counts as many as 57,000 hunters. But age leaves an increasingly strong mark on the moose hunting corps. Now, for the first time, over half of moose hunters are over 50.
– Moose hunting provides fantastic food, healthy nature experiences and has an important social function. If we want to have this activity and culture in the future as well, we have to take action, says Statskog’s head of hunting and fishing, Jo Inge Breisjøberget, via a press release.
How to apply and which deadlines apply can be found at statskog.no.
Hunting grounds reserved for youth
Statskog opens applications for its moose hunting grounds from 1 April. The state enterprise attracts young people in particular by holding several attractive terrains for young people in a number of places in Norway. Here, youth status lasts until the year you turn 30.
Development among the moose hunters
The number of moose hunters in the 2022-2023 season in Norway is 57,300. Over 90 per cent of these are men.
In 2007-2008, 43 per cent of elk hunters were over 50 years of age. Five years later, the figure had risen to 45 per cent. In the 2022-2023 season, 51 per cent of moose hunters are over 50.
Among the country’s counties in the 2022-2023 season, Trøndelag stands out at the top with 11,000 elk hunters, closely followed by Viken (10,200) and Innlandet (9,700). At the bottom are Oslo (1,500), Vestland (1,300) and Rogaland (1,100).
Preliminary figures show that 26,007 moose were felled in the last hunting season. Most were felled in Innlandet (7,427), Trøndelag (5,627) and Nordland (4,192). The number of moose felled has decreased over several years and has not been lower since 1988.
The figures are taken from www.ssb.no and disseminated via Statskog
– We ensure they have access to good hunting, while pure youth teams can be extra attractive and inspiring to be part of. What’s more, we make it harmless by attaching an experienced hunter to the individual youth teams, says Breisjøberget.
Half price on hunting license
In addition to team hunting, Statskog offers elk hunting licenses. These offers tend to come somewhat further into the hunting season.
Here, too, young people will now receive special treatment when Statskog offers half price on youth cards. In reality, many people will then be able to take part in moose hunting for well under the hundred mark.
– For some, it seems that price is of very little importance. For the younger ones, however, we believe that half price will be extra welcome, says Breisjøberget.
