How can you write about the murder of your own sister?
January is a dark month, and this year it felt darker than usual. Ten murders were committed before the end of the month, and in several of the cases the victims were women killed by men – men they often had a close relationship with, a husband, a father. With this as a backdrop, it feels almost impossible to review Fuck you – a story about a woman’s murder, by Niels Frank. The story of the murder of sister Elin is shocking in itself. Even more shocking is how normal such a murder turns out to be.
“Niels, he shot her.”
It is in the middle of the pandemic in 2021. The Danish writer Niels Frank receives a phone call in the morning that his sister Elin, aged 62, has been brutally shot and killed by her husband – in front of family and friends. How could that happen?
