It’s been a pretty comfortable few weeks where we’ve had to report on talented developers losing their jobs in the games industry on an almost daily basis, but Sega is now returning to what feels like the new normal by announcing more layoffs.

The Japanese company has revealed that 240 employees across the company will lose their jobs. Most of these layoffs are expected to hit the already fractured teams Creative Assembly (which anyway recently laid off a number of employees, at the same time as the apparently largely finished Hyenas was shut down) and Sega Europe, although Sega HARDlight will also face some layoffs .

As for why Relic Entertainment isn’t laying off any developers this time, it’s because Sega is selling developer Company of Heroes 3. Relic isn’t going to move to another publisher, but instead wants to explore the independent development scene.

With these redundancies in mind, the total number of lost jobs in the gaming industry in 2024 is around 8,000, which is approx. 3,000 fewer than in 2023, and we are still only at the end of March.
