Liverpool’s dream of winning the Premier League in Jürgen Klopp’s final season suffered a real setback on Wednesday night.

In the friendly against Everton at Goodison Park, it was an embarrassing loss for the Reds.

It means that Manchester City and Arsenal are now in the driver’s seat in terms of winning the league title this season.

After the match, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk spoke about the tight match schedule and that he feels it is unfair that the club will be back in action with a new league match already on Saturday around lunchtime in England.

Rooney: – Heard that before

Manager Jürgen Klopp has also complained several times about the tight match schedule this season, a season that has been characterized by many injuries in the Anfield club’s squad, despite the fact that they have long been fighting at the top of the Premier League.

However, former Everton and Manchester United player Wayne Rooney snorts at the “whining” from the Liverpool camp.

– What is worrying here is that he is the captain and talks about Liverpool being fought at the bottom. Again, we also hear about kick-off at 12.30 (1.30 Norwegian time) after Liverpool have lost a derby match, says Rooney in the Sky Sports studio.

– The Liverpool players should be ready to play another game tomorrow. When you lose a derby, you want the games to be close.

Rooney thinks this with a tight match schedule is an excuse that Liverpool puts forward a little too often.

– We have heard it so many times from Liverpool when it comes to the 12.30 kick-off. Come on, this is your job.

– They should be ready to play another game, says the former Manchester United man.

– Must take us together

Van Dijk was interviewed by Sky Sports after Wednesday’s loss and it was on that occasion that he brought up what makes Rooney react.

– Now we just have to focus on kick-off at 12.30, again, said the Dutchman.

– These games (the derby) are always a fight and we shouldn’t lose, in my opinion. Now we have to get together and be ready for Saturday.

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp also referred to the upcoming match against West Ham as difficult.

– We must recover mentally and physically, and then be ready to play again at 12.30 on Saturday, said Klopp.

– It will be difficult to turn this around. We all know that. But we have to make sure we are ready, the German continued.

Rooney himself was critical

Klopp has complained several times in the past about Liverpool’s lineup this season. After the national team break in November, he was, for example, highly critical of the fact that a match against Manchester City had been moved to a so-called early match.

– To be honest, those who make these decisions, they don’t know anything about football. It is not possible, the German said at the time.

Saturday’s game against West Ham will be Liverpool’s fifth 12.30 (1.30pm) game on a Saturday this season.

Incidentally, Wayne Rooney has previously, during his time as an active player, even gone against these early matches in the Premier League.

– I just want to say that kick-off at 12.30 is not good for the players, he wrote on Twitter back in October 2011.

– Eating pasta at nine o’clock in the morning is not exactly fun, Rooney wrote further at the time.
