– Then it will be the sideline on me. It gets weird. But I’m rooting for them at home in Norway, says Jenny Rørvik to NRK.

She is not allowed to participate in the EC this weekend.

– It’s very exciting and a little weird. I have a seat in the same boat as Jenny for two seasons, says Thea Helseth.

Now the national team manager has decided to split the duo. Helseth’s new partner is Inger Seim Kavlie, who initially rows alone in the single sculler class.

– It’s a bit of an upheaval, says Kavlie.

Earlier in April, all three delivered good results in the World Cup:

• Helseth/Rørvik still in second place in double sculls.
• Kavlie came third in single sculls, Norway’s first podium place in single sculls for women ever.

None of them have been on the podium before. An hour later they received the surprising message that the crew becomes alter.

– It’s hard to get, we’re aware of that. So there is a thought behind that we should find the boat that we think will do best in the Olympics, says the national team manager Fredrik Becken.

The trio is now in Varese, Italy, ahead of the European Championships next weekend. But Rørvik will soon travel home to Norway, and watch the championship from his home country.

– It is a difficult situation for everyone to be in. There are extremely many feelings involved, we try to look after each other and train as well as possible, says Thea Helseth.

Will fight for an Olympic medal

National team manager Bekken believes that the change can mean that Norway will get a better boat, which will strengthen Norway’s medal chances in the Olympics.

He wants to find out.

– The reason we split is that we want to see if we have another boat, a double sculler that can row even faster. It is not to destroy what we have. We want to see all combinations and see what we can present in the Olympics that can make it as good as possible, says Bekken.

This means that Jenny Rørvik will be sent home before the European Championships have started, and you will see two rowers in the same boat who have not rowed together before.

– When everyone has won a medal in two different classes, then suddenly they split up, it’s a bit surprising. But one wants the fastest combination, so it is understandable that they want to try. Everyone has shown good speed on the water, win Thea Helseth.

But who will row in the Olympics is still not clear. Norway has one boat that is qualified, but who will sit aboard when the Olympic flame is lit will not be decided until later in the season.

– You have to try to keep your motivation up and train well. It is uncertain what the final withdrawal will be, says Rørvik.

– This is a completely normal procedure, but we cannot let the withdrawal last too long. They must rest in the training work, says Bekken.
