Erik ten Hag is a hard-pressed man, and the big question everyone is asking today is whether the Dutchman will be Manchester United manager when next season kicks off.

If he stays, he will probably have to agree to a 25% pay cut, writes Mark Ogden in ESPN.

The reason was as simple as United not likely to be playing Champions League football next season.

Both Ten Hag and several of the players must have performance-based contracts related to how the team does, and failure to participate in the Champions League can therefore ensure a cut of 25%.

The Champions League fiasco this season could be bad news for both Ten Hags and several of the players’ wallets.

Ten Hag is now reportedly on an annual salary of £9m a year as United manager, so any pay cut would drop that to £6.75m.

As of today, however, the club must still prepare for next season with Ten Hag as manager, although this may of course change closer to the summer.

ESPN writes that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the club’s new sporting management have anyway investigated alternatives to Ten Hag by assessing the qualities of other managers, including Gareth Southgate (England), Roberto De Zerbi (Brighton), Thomas Frank (Brentford) and Gary O’Neil (Wolves).
