The mosque in Stavanger received a package containing an unidentified powder on Monday.

Monday 29 April at 22:16

With the help of the police on the scene, it has now been confirmed through double testing that the package does not contain a powder of a dangerous substance.

– We will not go into what substance this is for tactical reasons. It is continuously being assessed how we are going to secure this further for track checks, either locally or centrally at Kripos, they said on Monday evening.

The crime scene will be opened for normal crime scene work related to forensic investigations.

The police quickly involved PST in the case.

– We are informed and assist local police on an ongoing basis, says senior advisor Eirik Veum in PST to VG.

The mosque is located in Hillevåg in Stavanger. The police received a report about the case at 3.40pm.

The police’s bomb squad was mobilized as specialist expertise to secure the package. They arrived by police helicopter.

The police reported at 18.50 that a person has undergone a cleaning procedure and taken to hospital for a check-up. Other people in the building underwent a change of clothes and more, before they were also transported to SUS for a check.

It was reported early on that a person had been in contact with the package’s contents.

– We received a package letter today which our imam opened. The package was addressed to us and contained some hate messages and some white powder. Because of the powder, the police have taken it as a terrorist threat, says Ahmet Coksurer at the Rogaland Islamic Community Association (ISMG / Eyup Sultan Mosque).

– We withhold information for tactical reasons, but we have a trail to follow, says operations manager Steinar Knudsen to Stavanger Aftenblad.

The police tell VG that they have no hypothesis about terrorism.

– Did the package contain hate messages?

– I have no comment on that, says operations manager Steinar Knudsen to VG and adds that he has not seen the package.

The police did not consider that the situation posed a danger to the public, and that the incident was limited to a building.
