Mercedes is betting everything on its new operating system, and therefore has no plans to support the new Apple CarPlay, which the company secretly demonstrated two years ago, but which no cars on the road are equipped with yet.

Was Apple too late?

Apple just managed to announce a couple of new images and quotes with partners involved, Porsche and Aston Martin, on the eve of December last year. Since then it has been quiet. We expect to find out a lot more at this year’s WWDC on June 10. The strangest thing is that Mercedes-Benz was on the list in that December 20th article. This is because the information came from Apple, but that is no longer true.

Mercedes boss Ola Källenius stated above The Verge’s podcast Decoder: “The short answer is no, but you have to look at it from a bigger perspective. Everything that happens in this digital window to your car and to the world is not just infotainment. It’s not just the music you listen to or your phone call,” says Källenius to talk so quickly about the manufacturer’s new OS, which will debut next year in collaboration with Google. However, fear not: they remove not support for “CarPlay 1.0” which GM to everyone’s shock chose to do.

Does not remove old CarPlay

We are not so surprised: Tesla has for years dropped CarPlay and Android Auto (Google also supplies OS to well-known brands, such as Volvo, and not just mirroring with “Android Automotive OS”), as does Rivian. The problem has been that neither Apple nor Google have made major improvements to the interface that mirrors the content on the mobile, which has meant that the manufacturers have been able to create even better and more integrated systems.

We’re not fundamentalists who say, “We’re not going to allow a customer to use Apple CarPlay if that’s what they choose to do. So we have Apple CarPlay, we have Android Auto. If for any of the functions you feel more comfortable with it, you will switch back and forth. Be my guest, you can have that too.
