A historical study is underway in England. For the first time, British patients have been able to test the first ever cancer injection against mole cancer.

The injection is tailored to each individual patient and is based on mRNA technology. Experts in both England and Norway are now praising the trials and calling it a “game changer”.

– The hope is that it will be a cancer treatment with far fewer side effects than current treatments. Something that is very exciting, says Secretary General of the Cancer Association, Ingrid Stenstadvold Ross to Nettavisen.

– Cancer treatment of the future

– It is one of the most exciting things we have seen in a very long time. It is a very sensitive tool, Heather Shaw, who leads the study in England, tells Sky News.

The study is being conducted at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The injection is initially aimed at mole cancer and is intended to prevent patients from suffering a relapse from the disease. Mole cancer is the most common form of skin cancer in the world.

The injection also has the potential to stop bladder, lung and kidney cancer, several experts estimate.

The study is now entering a phase 3, where it is being tested on more British patients, after phase 2 of the study showed that those who were given the vaccine along with immunotherapy had almost a 50 percent lower chance of relapse or death after three years . The Guardian writes that.

The shot is designed to trigger the patient’s immune system so it can fight a patient’s specific type of cancer or tumor. Something that sets it apart from today’s treatments.

– This can be life-saving treatment for many cancer patients. The hope is that this will be the cancer treatment of the future, and that it will be more accurate and with fewer side effects than what we have today, says Ross.

Researched in Norway

The Secretary-General says more and more studies around the world are researching similar injections against different types of cancer.

Among other things, the Norwegian biotechnology company Nykode Therapeutics has begun a phase 2 study for a similar injection, but for those with cervical cancer. The study will take place in the USA, writes Finansavisen.

– Today marks an important step forward in our efforts to improve cancer treatment with the start of the phase 2 study of VB10.16. The collaboration between GOG and Nykode introduces a new and promising method to meet a significant unmet medical need, says Bradley Monk, director of GOG, in a press release.

– We are optimistic about how we can potentially change the landscape for cancer treatment and contribute to improvements that can make a meaningful difference in patients’ lives, says Monk.
