Russian soldiers are said to have killed at least 107 people and injured about the same number after returning home from the war in Ukraine.
This is shown by a review carried out by the independent Russian media Verstka. The finding is based on a review of public court documents and media coverage since the war began in 2022.
Was buried in Russia by mistake
Most of the soldiers had been recruited from Russian prisons, writes the independent Russian newspaper Meduza.
The review paints an ugly picture of the Russian war veterans.
55 of the cases – which resulted in a total of 76 deaths – were treated as murder, writes Meduza, which has gone through the investigation. In addition, 18 deaths were classified as serious ill-treatment.
– Putin is in a hurry
Traffic offenses committed by soldiers also led to eleven deaths. In Verstka’s review, there is also one case where soldiers caused the death of two children by giving them drugs.
Of the approximately 100 injured in the investigation, 70 were victims of soldiers who were prosecuted for “gross ill-treatment”. 16 were subjected to attempted murder and ten were injured in traffic accidents.
According to the investigation, the majority of the guilty soldiers – 91 people – were recruited into the army from Russian prisons. They were granted amnesty for participating in the war.
