Former Rosenborg coach Erik Hamrén has had a rich career. The Swede – who won league gold with Rosenborg in 2009 – is currently without a coaching job. He was last chief executive in Denmark’s Aalborg last year.
Hamrén has been an attractive coach throughout. After the EC in 2012 – where he coached the Swedish national team – a staggering offer should have come, according to him himself. He reveals this in the podcast Fördomspodden.
– After the EC, I got an offer from Saudi Arabia. It was a lot of money, he says.
– I can be honest and say that it was 30 million (Swedish) net for two years. It’s money. It would make us financially independent and it would affect the children, continues the Swedish coaching veteran.
Hamrén was in the thinking box, and wanted to inquire with the family.
– There was a family meeting there, where I told how it was. My dream was to travel to Brazil (two years later), to participate in a World Cup. The daughters said no. “Dad, you never took a job for the money. Drive in Brazil,” he says according to Expressen, which has also covered the case.
There was no World Cup for Sweden, but Hamrén continued as Swedish national team manager until 2016. Later, he also coached the Icelandic national team.
In 2009, the Swede received the Kniksen prize for coach of the year after his work with Rosenborg.
