Mayor Kjell Arne Hermansen has recently confirmed that Buskerudbyen will investigate a toll package for Drammen. This is a controversial topic, as the introduction of tolls will have serious consequences for both families’ finances and the local community as a whole.

Firstly the introduction of tolls will result in a significant financial burden for families in Drammen. It is estimated that an average family of four will have to pay approximately NOK 30,000 annually in tolls. This is a heavy burden on the household budget and will further limit families’ financial leeway, especially for those who are already struggling financially.

In addition, will increased toll crossings lead to a decline in trade and activity in the center of Drammen. This will have negative consequences for local businesses and jobs, creating a spiral of economic decline in the city.

Furthermore, the introduction will of tolls worsen the problem of child poverty in Drammen. The city already has high child poverty rates, and increased financial burdens will only make the situation worse. Children and young people from financially vulnerable families will be hardest hit, leading to restrictions on leisure activities, social participation, clothing and food. This means that young people will form more gangs as a lack of leisure activities can lead to this. Don’t we have enough problems in Drammen already with youth gangs?

Buskerudbyen

Buskerudbyen includes the municipalities of Lier, Drammen, Øvre Eiker and Kongsberg.

The busker tender cooperation consists of seven public partners who work to solve common challenges in transport, the environment and land development. The parties involved are Drammen, Lier, Øvre Eiker, Kongsberg, Viken county municipality, the National Road Administration, the Norwegian Railway Directorate.

The collaboration was entered into in January 2010. Together, the partners are responsible for all public development within transport, environment and land development in Buskerudbyen. The community plans and coordinates measures for how population and traffic growth can be met in the best possible way.

It is important to note that tolls do not necessarily solve the underlying traffic challenges in Drammen. There are other options, such as improving public transport and investment in infrastructure, which should also be thoroughly considered before a final decision is made.

As a politician in In Drammen, it is our responsibility to represent the interests of the residents. I therefore encourage thorough debate and assessment of alternative solutions that do not include tolls.

The introduction of tolls will be an unacceptable burden that will affect both the economy and the welfare of the inhabitants of Drammen. We must therefore find solutions that take into account the families’ finances and ensure sustainable development for our local community.
