It is Sveinung Kjellemo, and he is at the head of the Telemark Farmers’ and Small Farmers’ Association.

A united agriculture submitted its claim to the state on Friday in this year’s agricultural negotiations, which will start soon.

Long-term gain

– The requirement corresponds to the need we farmers have to close the income gap between us and other occupational groups. Higher incomes are necessary for us, says Kjellemo.

In addition, he points out that the requirement includes dough-based subsidies which are good for Telemark, where many thousands of measures have fallen out of production in recent years.

– How would you assess the possibilities for a breakthrough?

– I certainly look forward to it, and am convinced that the requirements can result in long-term gains if they are accepted.

Not enough compensation

When it comes to dough-based grants, it says, among other things:

“Today’s land subsidies do not capture differences in the actual cultivation conditions to a too small extent and do not sufficiently compensate for operating disadvantages. A better tool is therefore needed to achieve the goals of increased self-sufficiency.”

NOK 3.9 billion more

Bondelaget.no has compiled an overview of the requirements that the Norwegian Farmers’ Association and the Norwegian Farmers’ and Small Farmers’ Association have handed over to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food on behalf of the whole of agriculture. The government’s offer is due on 6 May, while 16 May is the last deadline to end the negotiations.

Here are the most important requirements:

* NOK 3.9 billion – NOK 1.4 to cover increased costs, NOK 0.8 billion to ensure that farmers have the same income development as the others, NOK 1.9 to close the income gap.

* Grants are required to be increased by 2.7 billion.

* “The requirement closes more than half of the income gap between farmers and other groups. For the average farmer, this means NOK 75,900 per family-year.’

Self-sufficiency and unstable weather

When it comes to self-sufficiency, the aim is for the degree of this to be increased to 50 per cent.

Unstable weather must be taken into account, and products must be developed that suit the country well.

A new model for milk production is also desired.
