Oslo: – Can’t continue

--

On the night of Sunday, a man in his 20s was shot at Grønland square in the center of Oslo.

The man was found seriously injured inside a kebab restaurant in Smalgangen, and was taken to hospital for treatment.

As of Sunday morning, no one has yet been arrested for the shooting. The police believe that the incident was not accidental, but both employees and customers were inside the restaurant when it crashed.

– I am deeply concerned about the development we are seeing. There are almost daily serious episodes of violence in Oslo, says city council leader Eirik Lae Solberg (H) to Dagbladet.

More episodes

In recent weeks alone, there have been several serious incidents of violence in the capital:

  • On 15 April, a young man in his late teens was shot in a hairdressing salon in Bryn. Six people have so far been charged in connection with the shooting, which the police believe may be an act of revenge after a brutal kidnapping in Romerike last year, according to Dagbladet’s information.
  • On 19 April, a man in his late teens was sent to hospital with stab wounds, after he was found outdoors at Vålerenga. No one has been arrested.
  • On the night of 20 April, a man in his 30s was sent to hospital after being stabbed in the city centre.
  • On 22 April, an 18-year-old boy was shot in Holmlia. It is currently unclear what happened, but one of the police’s hypotheses is that the shot went off by accident.
  • On Saturday evening, a man was sent to hospital after being stabbed in Møllergata in central Oslo. No one has been arrested so far, but the police are looking for two perpetrators. The victim was not seriously injured.

The city council leader is clear about what he thinks about this:

– This is a development that cannot continue. We cannot accept that gross violence – even shooting – is carried out in the streets of Oslo.

Calling for resources

According to the police’s own statistics, 17 attempted murders with firearms were reported in 2023 in Oslo.

The statistics worry Solberg, who is calling for more resources for the police in the capital. According to the city council leader, there have been 133 fewer police officers in Oslo in the past year.

– We have to have a stronger police effort in Oslo. It is disturbing that there are so many episodes – that the threshold for committing violence has become markedly lower. I urge the government to allocate significant resources to the police in Oslo, so that we can reverse this serious development, says the city council leader.

Can strengthen Exit program

Solberg believes that the municipality also has a responsibility, and refers to the so-called Exit program which aims to help young people out of criminal environments.

– It is a program that we recently made permanent, and we will look at the possibilities of strengthening it.

The city council leader also points to other measures:

  • An arrangement where all children, regardless of their parents’ finances, can participate in leisure activities.
  • Strengthening mental health care through the school health service.

– We must work preventively to ensure that children and young people have good arenas in which to succeed, so that they do not easily become victims of criminals who want to recruit them, says Solberg.
