On Friday morning, the applicant numbers from Samordna admissions were published.

At Høgskulen på Vestlandet, the growth in the number of applicants for nursing education is clearly the greatest.

– 31 per cent more applicants have put this education at the top of their application this year compared to last year, the college writes.

In total, there are around three and a half thousand people who want to train to become nurses at HVL in Bergen.

Nationally, 900 more had nursing as their first choice in their application for higher education than last year, the figures show.

Bergen is increasing in popularity the most

In general, more people want to study in Bergen, the figures show.

Almost 2,100 more applicants than last year have studies in Bergen as their first choice. This is an increase of 11.45 per cent.

In comparison, Oslo has a decrease in the number of applicants by around 100 applicants, while Trondheim has an increase of only 0.62 per cent.

– It is fantastically gratifying that Bergen is increasing its popularity as a study city! We are already sure that Bergen is the best study city, and it’s great fun that the young people seeking education really seem to have opened their eyes to Bergen, says Pinar Heggernes, who is vice-chancellor at UiB and chairman of the board for Education in Bergen.

Jurisprudence at its best

The University of Bergen has the largest increase in the proportion of applicants among the major universities in Norway, according to the figures from Samordna admissions.

In total, UiB has more than 11,400 applicants for 4,151 study places. This means an increase in the number of applicants by eight per cent compared to last year.

2,055 of them have as their top wish to study law, which is the course with by far the most applicants.

Studying law in Bergen is actually Norway’s most popular course, with a total of 6,294 applicants.

The bachelor’s program for artificial intelligence is steadily increasing in popularity, with 35 percent more applicants than last year.

The figures also show that the trend of declining numbers of applicants to teacher training courses in Bergen has reversed.

Jubilant city council leader

Veslandet University can also show good figures for its social worker education, with 18 per cent more first-choice applicants than last year.

– I am very happy that we have good numbers of applicants. Municipalities, hospitals and other businesses in large parts of the country are struggling to recruit enough. That we get more people educated is important for the whole of Western Norway, says Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences Randi Skår.

City councilor Christine Meyer (H) hails the good figures for Bergen.

– These are fantastic figures for our city! Bergen is to be Norway’s best city for students, and the applicant numbers show that Bergen is well on its way to becoming Norway’s leading student city. The students are very important to our city, and we look forward to welcoming the new students in August, says Meyer.

National figures

A total of 142,416 people have applied for higher education via Samordna admissions, an increase of 4.7 per cent, the government writes in a press release. At the same time, there have never been more study places to apply for than this year, 2.4 per cent more than last year.

Despite the fact that the pendulum is turning for nursing after several years of decline, there is the greatest increase for history, economics and social science.

There are also more and more people who want to take higher vocational education. 2,300 more have applied to vocational schools through Samordna admissions this year than last year, an increase of around 17 per cent.

– It is very good that even more people are opening their eyes to vocational school education. These are educations that can be combined with work and are in demand in working life, says Research and Higher Education Minister Oddmund Hoel (Sp).
