The lament of the students who cannot get a job can be heard all over the internet. Worse than mechanical cams, say.
We can read about quite a lot of disappointed, disappointed and dissatisfied students who have been promised one thing and another, where now the consulting company simply gives up.
The problem is actually that even if you have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in something IT-related, the customer demands that you delivers value from the first second.
If you then have to shepherd a student in addition to doing your own work, then things quickly come to a standstill and the value can be a little low, compare the hourly rate to a consultant with a really long beard, no hair or very long hair.

Requirements for quality within IT are sky-high. I was lucky to be able to type on an EDB machine for GDPR, the wild west of the internet, I often shot from the hip.
There were good times, when you were a resource if you could do simple things like “make websites”, “FTP”, “IRC”, “dhcp” were considered black magic.
Database? Gosh. DNS setup? Lord Jesus, it wasn’t for anyone, no. App on the AppStore? Is it possible? Call Bømlo New!
Those times are over, we don’t deal with black magic anymore, the industry is mature, the customers (some at least) understand what we are doing to a large extent and have a high level of IT competence themselves.

“Students have it all too well!”
Now it must be said that I have never worked as a consultant elsewhere than in my own company, so I cannot speak for anyone other than medium-sized consulting companies.
But something should be said, and that is that students have it far too well and that they know far too little.
No, that would be wrong. The problem is high interest rates, and together with poor ungrateful students, it is impossible to hire new people.
That’s not right either, the point is that the customer doesn’t understand that investment in digitization provides great value in the short, medium, long and medium term.
Wait a minute, it’s AI’s fault, now all senior developers are more or less on cocaine, so now I can fire those who don’t pay NOK 200 a month for ChatGPT 4.0 secretly.
The truth is probably more nuanced. A bit of corona correction, a bit of interest rate pain, a bit of Vedum idiocy, a bit too optimistic CFOs whoop and whine.

One or another billing level
I can say, rather disappointedly, that I have two jokers who are graduating with professional certificates from us now, but we cannot offer them jobs. The customer has sky-high expectations for the delivery of value and the willingness to pay for junior skills is not here for many of us.
I don’t think any of the
- elements at konsulentkarma.no had a plan to mess up the lives of a bunch of students.
I think the idea was rather to get them into one or another invoicing level in one or another giga project, and to bring in a good amount of money at the same time as their skills grow and they move towards a senior invoicing rate. Now there simply aren’t enough such projects out there. Some yes, but not many enough.

- s. But what I can say on the other hand, dear students, is that I looked at it black last autumn, pitch black. But now I think I can smell light in the tunnel.
When we look back at last year’s 1,000th anniversary at Moster (summer 2025), there will be brown shoes ready to dive in many places. Then you are already a senior developer (in some company anyway), with a year’s experience in your luggage and can be put straight into billable work!
