– The price of Grandiosa was lowered on Monday evening. When I came to work on Tuesday, the shelf was already empty, says Lie, who is the store manager at Kiwi Bølevegen in Skien.
From two to 75
On Wednesday afternoon, a Grandiosa costs NOK 20.68 at Kiwi. The regular price is usually between NOK 40-60.
There is no doubt that customers have caught on to the price war.
– We sold two Grandiosas on Tuesday last week. This Tuesday we sold 75. I was lucky and managed to order another pallet yesterday. Now we can’t order any more this week. It will be evenly distributed between all the stores, she says.
The Kiwi chain was not the first to lower the price of the frozen pizza.

– We followed when another chain lowered the price, says Lie.
It was Coop Extra that started the price war at Grandiosa this time. According to Nettavisen, both Rema 1000, Oda, Coop Extra and Kiwi are involved in the price war.
The store manager at Kiwi Bølevegen says it hasn’t been long since the last price war at Grandiosa, which was a few months ago.
– The price is even lower now. Last time it was a problem to get hold of enough Grandiosa, and we are sure to run out this time. This applies to all the stores that are involved in the price war, says Lie.
She has not yet set any limits on how many frozen pizzas customers can buy at a time, but does not rule out the possibility that this could happen.
– We are waiting for any joint message from the chain, says Lie.

Empty same evening
At the “neighbor”, Rema 1000 Menstad, it is empty for Grandiosa on Wednesday.
– The price was lowered on Monday, and we ran out the same evening. Such price adjustments happen suddenly and spread quickly in online forums and social media. The price with us is now NOK 20.86, says merchant Andre Vreim to Varden on Wednesday afternoon.
The store has introduced a recommendation on the maximum number of Grandiosa customers can buy.
– We recommend a maximum of three per customer, so that as many as possible can buy. We will receive more by Friday, says Vreim.
– Gift package for customers
Grocery expert Odd Gisholt tells VG that there is a fierce battle between the discount chains.
– The market is overall quite flat at the moment, and the only way to survive is to steal market space from the competitors. Then they are constantly trying new things, says Gisholt.
– But the only people who can enjoy this are me and you as consumers. It is a gift package for the customers, he says.
