The Lerøy trawler “Kongsfjord” immediately stopped fishing and went ashore in Hammerfest when they picked up a dead person with the trawl last Friday.

On Monday, the police announced in a press release that it was Latvian Romans Solovjovs (38) who was found in the trawl.

– I am in shock. There was such a small chance that he would be found. But it is a relief, says widow Viktorija Strazda to NRK.

She was called by the police last week after the trawler had caught a person in the trawler on 12 April. This was another tough emotional reminder of the loss of her husband more than a year ago. She has two sons who are also affected by the loss of their father.

– I was afraid to tell the children that Roman had been found. But they reacted well, she says to the state channel.

Havøy Kystfiske’s general manager, Jøran Helde, tells NRK that they are grateful that Solovjovs was found and that they will continue to assist the family.

– Our thoughts go primarily to the family and friends of the Solovjovs in this difficult time. Havøy Kystfiske will be available to assist the next of kin and the authorities in coordinating the transport of Solovjov’s home to Latvia as quickly and dignified as possible, says Helde to NRK.

Solovjovs was reported missing to the police following a report of a man overboard on a vessel fishing for snow crab off Svalbard on 30 January 2023.

Both the shipping company and the authorities received criticism from the Accident Investigation Board in its review of what happened on board “Hunter” when Romans Solovjovs was dragged overboard during the setting of the rails.
