The fire crews from Tønsberg station responded on Saturday evening to an automatic fire alarm from a care home in Tønsberg.
There they found an electric kettle that had been placed on top of the stove plates. The bottom of the kettle had melted.

– The apartment was smoky and we aired it out with a fan, says fire chief Rune Loraas.

The fire brigade disconnected the stove before leaving the scene.

Although the fire service understands that it can be tempting to put things on the plates in the absence of other counter space, the fact is that it is a fire hazard.
– Time and time again, objects on the stove top catch fire, they say.
It could be, for example, because the record is turned on by accident, or that it slips and someone inadvertently turns the record on.
– We have no basis to say anything about tonight’s incident and possible cognitive impairment, but in general it is a challenge for some when a kettle with a cord resembles a coffee kettle, the fire service writes on Facebook.

According to the fire service, the alarm went off long before a directly dangerous situation arose.

– Test that you have working smoke detectors yourself, and show that you care in the upcoming festive season: test with those of you who can’t do it themselves.
– Always take a look at the stove every single night before you go to bed, to make sure it’s turned off, they point out.
