The Conservative Party and SV will consider a medical certificate in order to obtain a weapons permit

– The government must step in and see if the gun laws need to be tightened. The proposals from the weapons law committee must certainly be looked at and reassessed, says justice policy spokesperson Sveinung Stensland in the Conservative Party to TV 2.

Both in the triple homicide case in Nes in January and in the triple homicide case in Torpo last weekend, the presumed perpetrator was a close family member of the killed and used a hunting weapon with a legal weapons permit.

Today, there is no requirement for a doctor’s certificate to obtain a firearms permit, nor is there any duty for healthcare personnel to report if patients they treat give cause for concern because they have a firearms permit, unless there is an acute danger to life and health. Much of this was proposed by the Weapons Act Committee to change in 2012.

– The murders we have seen recently make it necessary for the politicians to come to the fore and look at what we can do to prevent more murders. Then it is natural that we look at these proposals again, says SV’s justice policy spokesperson Andreas Sjalg Unneland.

Minister of Justice Emilie Enger Mehl (Sp) reminds that the cases are still under investigation.

– The cases are still under investigation. It is therefore also too early to say whether the specific cases are a basis for changes in, for example, the Arms Act. On a general basis, both violence in close relationships and psychiatry are priority areas for the government in its efforts to prevent loss of life, she says.
