Apple hopes to super-accelerate the tablet market in 2024

We are talking here about an improvement of 1 percent in the first quarter compared to the first quarter of 2023 with 33.7 million units shipped – this after four consecutive quarters of decline. It probably didn’t help that Apple didn’t launch new iPads last year, for the first time, but tomorrow the company will launch new iPad Pro OLED and iPad Air 12.9″.

In that case, they are entering a market that is a bit open even if the macro-economic situation in the world is far from predictable.

Then the question is whether the 1 percent increase is a place Apple feels they can grow in, if it is the case that the company dominates tablet sales – according to Canalys they are leading, but they are far from alone, especially in the first quarter of this year Samsung of 20 per cent (same as in the first quarter of last year) followed by the apple company’s 36 per cent (down from 42 per cent in the first quarter of last year:)

2023 was a deplorable tablet year

“The tablet industry has had a positive start to 2024, and the rest of the year should bring further relief after a difficult 2023. Despite the extended period of cautious consumer spending on tablets, vendors have remained ambitious. New market players have continued to invest in the category while the traditional heavyweights deliver on innovation to excite customers and drive new areas of use,” Canalys summarizes, explaining Apple’s situation:

“Apple remained on top of the worldwide tablet market in Q1 2024, with 12 million iPads, giving it a 36 percent market share. Samsung grew by a modest 1 percent and retained second place with 6.8 million units. Huawei held onto third place for a subsequent quarter, selling 2.7 million units, resulting in strong year-on-year growth of 70 percent, driven mainly by demand in its home market of China and across the Asia-Pacific region. Lenovo and Amazon took fourth and fifth place respectively, both selling over 2 million tablets.

Of particular note is Apple’s anticipated move to incorporate OLED displays into iPad Pros, signaling a significant landmark in display technology preferences across the top vendors’ tablet portfolios. Additionally, 2024 is slated to usher in a surge in new tablet form factors and functionality, with manufacturers focusing on both foldable designs and glasses-free 3D content viewing. The tablet market is on track to stabilize above pre-pandemic levels, supported by a gradual recovery trajectory. The realization of postponed commercial and public deployments from last year and the rapid expansion of 5G infrastructure in untapped markets will reinforce the demand for tablets.”

Again, Huawei surges forward on the online market as they do with mobile phones in their home country, which gives Apple a headache.
