The snack producer OLW, perhaps best known for “Cheez doodles”, is now introducing a deposit on its chip bags in Sweden, reports TV4.se. This is how they want to teach the Swedes to throw plastic in the right place.
OLW sells around 80 million bags of crisps in Sweden each year, and the vast majority are thrown away with the rest of the waste, according to the manufacturer. But now you can get a deposit, through the recycling app Bower.

– In Sweden, we are good at collecting and sorting aluminum and glass, but unfortunately we are bad at plastic. Large quantities are incinerated instead of recycled. We hope we can increase the amount of plastic collected by giving consumers a clearer incentive, says Sofia Johard, brand manager for OLW.
According to Swedish Plastic Recycling, more than half of plastic packaging is sorted incorrectly in Sweden.

– Will consider in Norway
Elisabeth Aandstad Ekheim, communications director for Orkla Confectionery & Snacks, does not know whether Orkla in Norway has considered something similar for chip bags, but tells DinSide that it is certainly something they will look into.
– For Kims, we switched to chip bags in recyclable plastic already in 2018. To make it easier for consumers, we clearly mark on the back that the bag can be recycled as plastic.
The company is also working to use more monoplastic in the packaging, so that as much of the packaging as possible can be recycled.

Pawn app
The chip bags should not be pawned like cans and bottles, but through the Bower pawning app. With the Bower app, you can scan various products you recycle and collect points. These points can be converted into cash, exchanged for discounts or products, or donated to a charity.
A bag of cheez doodles will give five points in Sweden, which can be converted to 67 Swedish øre, according to TV4.
We Norwegians pledge billions worth of bottles every single year, and here we also have clear incentives.
When we started this case, 449,698,181 cans and bottles had been pledged so far this year, according to Infinitum. A couple of hours later, the number was up to 450,550,602.
