Politician arrested for shooting after Riksdag meeting – NRK Norway – Overview of news from various parts of the country

--

A late meeting in the Riksdag, which continued past midnight, causes the media to ask questions about whether Vornanen brought the weapon to work.

– It is something that is up to the police to investigate, says The Riksdag’s Secretary General Antti Pelttari to HBL.

The plenary session in the Riksdag is said to have continued until 2am on Friday, but it is unclear when Vornanen left, writes the newspaper HBL.

Vornanen must be a keen hunter, and therefore has permission to have weapons. He usually works in the police.

Vornanen has been released on Saturday, says party secretary Harri Vuorenpää in Sannfinnene, at 19:00 on Saturday. That’s what Helsingin Sanomat writes.

The conflict started at 03:30

The commotion that led to the shooting incident should have started at 03.30 in the center of Helsinki.

Finnish police have sent out a press release on Saturday in which it appears that a 54-year-old man ended up in an argument with a man from another company, at the nightclub and karaoke bar Ihku.

ARRESTED: Vormanen is in his first term in the Riksdag and represents the right-wing populist government party Sannfinnen.

Outside, the 54-year-old man suddenly took out the registered fine caliber weapon he had with him. He pointed the barrel of the weapon at those present. After this, the man fired one shot into the ground, the police write in the press release.

Caught on film

The police state that, according to the law, they cannot confirm the man’s identity. But several Finnish media write that it is about Vortanen, and the country’s top politicians comment that it is about an elected official.

It is still early in the investigation and how Vornanen reacts to the suspicions against him is not known.

A surveillance camera recorded the incident.

There is nothing else to disclose about the case at the moment. If necessary, the police will provide more information as the investigation progresses.

Scandal

Both the Prime Minister and the President of Finland comment on the case.

– A criminal case against an elected representative of the Riksdag is always a very serious matter, writes Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo to the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.

Pursuant to section 28 of the constitution, the Riksdag can decide that a member of the Riksdag’s mandate ends “if a member of the Riksdag has been sentenced to prison for an intentional crime by a final judgment”, writes HBL.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb tells the Finnish news agency FNB that he expects the Finnish legal system to clarify such a case as this. It is not up to a president to question whether Vornanen can continue as a Riksdag representative, he says further.

Party leader of Sannfinnenne says the incident the police describe is very serious.
