– The biggest danger to European security is the war in Ukraine, and it is a prerequisite for our security that Russia does not win this war of aggression, said the French president when he spoke at the Sorbonne University in Paris on Thursday.
He also emphasizes that Europe must stand on its own two feet and show that it is not a silent kingdom under the United States.
The EU countries are already embarking on a large-scale rearmament to achieve NATO’s goal of spending 2 percent of GDP on defence. However, Macron wants to go even further and encourages Europe to find a common and credible defense strategy.
He believes that Europe is at a crossroads and must do more to be competitive in the face of other countries that are equipping themselves.
– We have to build this strategic concept for a credible European defense for ourselves, said Macron, who in the coming months will ask other European countries for proposals on how this should be done.
Macron himself proposes that a separate European military school be established to train European personnel. He believes that the European defense industry must have priority when it comes to material, and that Europe must also secure a common strategy to protect itself against computer attacks.
Europe’s military cooperation with the United Kingdom must also be strengthened, the French president insists.
