A 23-year-old woman has been paralyzed and is fighting for her life against a deadly bacterial infection.

According to the woman’s family, the infection was caused by bacteria from food, but it is not known which food item is to blame.

It is now being speculated whether the bacteria came from a canned soup the young woman had eaten before she fell ill.

Got the dream job

The 23-year-old snowboarder Claudia de Albuquerque Celeada, originally from Brazil, recently went to Aspen in the US state of Colorado for an exchange program.

According to her sister, she had got her dream job in the mountain town.

It was during her stay there that she suddenly felt dizzy, had double vision and breathing problems.

24 hours later, all the muscles in her body were paralyzed, and the woman was put on a ventilator. The Daily Mail writes.

After two weeks, the doctors at the hospital were able to determine that Celeda had been affected by the bacterial infection botulism.

According to Health Norway, botulism is poisoning with toxins produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, and can lead to very serious symptoms.

Cases of botulism should be rare, but can come from foods such as shaved fish, cured meats and canned goods.

It is now suspected that the 23-year-old fell ill after eating canned soup, writes the Daily Mail.

About 15 days after Celeda bought the box of soup, she is said to have gone home from work early when she felt ill. It is not known exactly when the 23-year-old should have eaten the soup.

– She took a shower, ate dinner and went to bed, but is said to have been short of breath, blurred vision and dizzy, her sister Luisa Albuquerque told the Portuguese newspaper UOL.

Pointing to soup

The 23-year-old is also said to have sent a message to some friends and asked if they could come over, but the message is said not to have been seen until the following morning.

Then her condition would have been much worse, says the sister.

According to Helse Norge, symptoms of botulism often appear 12 to 36 hours after one has ingested the toxins. In some cases, it can take even longer.

Celeda was rushed to hospital where after a short time she became 100 per cent paralysed. On March 1, she was diagnosed with botulism.

Doralice Goes, who has survived botulism in the past, has followed Celeda’s case closely. She claims it is the canned soup that is the source of the toxins.

The 23-year-old’s family has confirmed that the bacterial infection has come through food, but has not gone into which food item is involved.

The health authorities stated last week that they believe they have found the source of the toxins. They believe it is an isolated incident, and not a risk to others at the present time.
