In March, it became known that foreign tourists account for 28.4 per cent of all home purchases on the Spanish archipelago, and in the last five years this figure has increased by 10.3 per cent.

Now Canariavisen reports that there has been a new draft law for holiday apartments in the Canary Islands, which may give the municipalities greater authority to limit the number of holiday apartments in their areas.

– The law aims to limit such letting in order to stem the violent growth that has occurred in the number of holiday homes. This increase has, among other things, been blamed for rising house prices and a housing shortage on the holiday islands, writes the online newspaper.

It will be banned

Will stop illegal letting of holiday homes

According to Canariavisen, tourism minister Jessica de León explains that the municipalities are given the authority to limit the number of rental homes based on towns, neighbourhoods, population or district.

– Permission for new holiday apartments will only be possible if the municipal plan allows it, she says.

Nettavisa informs that one of the main objectives of the ministry is to stop the illegal letting of holiday apartments on the archipelago.

– After the consultation round, the Canary Islands government will introduce an emergency procedure to get the law approved. The goal is for the law to be considered in parliament in September and can enter into force by the end of the year, writes Canariavisen.

Tourist hat: – Go home!

DinSide has written on several occasions that tourism in the Canary Islands is increasing, and in January the Swedish Expressen wrote that tourist hatred is growing.

On La Tejita beach in the south of Tenerife, the tourists were greeted by the following message: “Tourists, go home!” it was on a building by the popular beach.

Recently Canarian Weekly and the travel website Flysmart24 reported that local residents will mobilize a protest train against mass tourism in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
